Book Review: Yolanda Shanks' "Not Just A Hearer But A Doer"

I am pleased to introduce this book to you:  Not Just A Hearer But A Doer by Yolanda Shanks.  The title of this book jumped out at me, because my "platform" if you will, is all about GOING and DOING and not just sitting and praying. (Again, don't get me wrong, I do NOT underestimate the POWER of prayer...but sometimes, only ACTION can meet a need.)

I was so excited to see a devotional about this exact subject in the products to review for Christian Women Affiliate's Review Crew.

In 31 days, Yolanda Shanks lays out 31 things that we can DO to "deliberately live life" according to the Word of God.

What I loved most about this book is that Mrs. Shanks breaks down short Scripture passages or verses and defines the key words from them.  When necessary, she delves into the Greek or Hebrew origin of the word, which is TRULY the only way to understand some parts of the Bible.  I love that she challenges us to live actively.  I mean, come on, live IS a verb!

The thing I didn't care for so much (that other people may see as a plus) is how brief the topics were.  There is something beneficial to getting so much meat in such a short devotional, but I am the type of person that likes to answer questions and write things down, take notes, etc.  There really isn't much room for this, except at the end of each chapter, where there are a few lines to "Personalize Today's Scripture Text."

As I said, for some, this may be ideal.  For me personally, I found it to be a bit too succinct.

Either way, it is obvious that Yolanda Shanks has a passion for living out the word of God, and being a DOER, not just a hearer.
About the Author: Yolanda Shanks Multi-published author, speaker, blogger, teacher, wife, grandmother—Yolanda Shanks wears many hats, but the one she most resonates with is her role as an advocate for living life to its fullest.

Shanks’ award-winning first book, Destined to Live, Despite Me, continues to be a source of hope for those battling effects from a prior suicide attempt. It garnered an enthusiastic Kirkus review, which stated the book was “a commendable guide for finding meaning after considering suicide.”

Her second book, Not Just a Hearer but a Doer (released June 2012) challenges the body of Christ to act upon scripture. In the Fall of 2012, she released a third project, entitled Destined to Live, Despite Me – A Cause to Be Thankful.
