Don't #$#!$# at me!

So today I'm linking up with the WORLD famous Mama Kat's writing workshop. She sends out prompts and every Thursday you can link up.  I always WANT to do this, but it seems like I always remember on like, Saturday.

So the prompt I chose was an opinion post (I know, me? Express my opinion?  Really?).  Anyway, the assignment is to write about how I feel about cussing in blog land. Acceptable? Unacceptable? Do I keep reading?

The short answer is that it is unacceptable, and I do not keep reading.  And it's not just because I'm a Christian.  I love the Lord, and yes, I still curse sometimes.  I am FAR from perfect.  I know I've even cursed on my blog. I just think having it as a regular part of speech is tacky.  I'm talking about taking the Lord's name in vain, dropping the "f" bomb every other sentence, and things like that.

I do not write "professionally" on my blog; but I try not to offend anyone.  I don't always stick to perfect grammar, after all, it is MY blog.  I'm not a stickler for punctuation rules, and I use as many exclamation marks as I want, thank you very much!!!  And I KNOW that annoys some people.  But I don't think it's the same of offending someone by using foul language.

And it's kind of a bummer, because I have stumbled on some really. good. blogs. that I just couldn't keep reading because the language was SO foul.  So there you have it.  My opinion.  I'm sure many will disagree; that what makes the world go 'round.  I won't even say it's "unprofessional":  Just because you have a blog doesn't mean that you are a professional writer, or even claim to be. However, surely you can find other adjectives other than "f" bombs.

Thanks for the awesome ideas every week Mama!
Now YOUR turn.....go to Mama's Losin' It and link up!

Like you, I'm not a fan of swearing. It was a little uncomfortable to put that out there as I'm sure the vast majority may not agree but it's not cool. It doesn't show any creativity or intelligence in using language. It's kind of lazy. THanks for your post.

Sorry, I'm a potty-mouth. But I do respect your opinion. And I definitely agree that you can use as many !!!'s as you darn well please.

Normally I do not curse on my blog, but I have a couple of times when the emotions are just so raw from the situations that have just happened that it has to come out.

I usually warn my readers that there is strong language ahead so they can make the decision to keep reading. Most do.

Forgive me for plugging, but here is a doozie:

Wait...isn't that a bit hypocritical?

It's okay that you curse at home or have occasionally cursed on your blog but it's not okay for others to do it?

Why must you or others imply that those of us who do swear are lazy, foul-mouthed heathens incapable of intelligent thought?

I would agree that those who use it excessively may be lacking in the intelligence department. However those of us who use it daily but do so carefully and are aware of our surroundings generally are not.

Having a couple @#%$ in my posts in no way makes me a bad writer. While I respect the opinions of others, sometimes I feel like those who do not swear on their blogs and/or in real life seem to have this high and mighty attitude towards those that do. I don't get it.

I'm a potty mouth too. I try to use alternative words but sometimes nothing will cut it but a good ol' f@#$. I totally agree with you on the punctuation though - your blog, your rules!

Kim, I don't think I'm being hypocritical. I'm talking about every other word cursing. When you can't get through a paragraph without seeing 20 curse words, I'd rather not read it. I don't drop the f bomb around my house, I don't use it on my blog. I'm talking about an occasional mild curse.

And I did not say people who curse are poor writers. I said it was tacky, and there are many other options as adjectives.

This was an opinion piece, and that is my opinion. I do not feel my post said anything about implying "that those of [you] who do swear are lazy, foul-mouthed heathens incapable of intelligent thought?"

I don't see myself as someone who judges people, because I don't want them judging me.

This is a great post Kerri, and I feel exactly the same way. I also think there are a lot of really great blogs out there that don't use swearing to make their points. I choose to read what is positive instead of the things that bring me down.

You spoke for a lot of bloggers but I read if it is not bad cursing....I am perfect, haha I really do not curse, just my lifestyle

Well said and I get what you're saying, I agree that in excess it sounds ignorant and/or trashy. That's why I try to keep it to a minimum or when I'm REALLY ticked off.

Love Changes Everything by Micah Berteau - A Book Review

If you're not familiar with the story of Hosea and Gomer in the Bible, it's really quite shocking.  Here's my brief synopsis...
