Devotion: When You Cannot Meet Everyone’s Expectations of You

This wonderful article was written by Karlton Douglas. It was posted on the Rest Ministries website (www.restministires.com) and is used with the author's permission.

About the Author:  Karlton lives in Ohio with his lovely wife. Affliction has led to many failed expectations, but the Lord delivers him from them all.

“When she saw her hope unfulfilled, her expectation gone, she took another of her cubs and made him a strong lion.” (Ezekiel 19:5)

In the expectations game everyone loses when it comes to living with an illness. We can become discouraged and depressed when we find our hopes dashed, when we have a few “good days” and expect them to last, only to be knocked flat again by affliction a short time later.

Expectations can create all sorts of problems between spouses and friends and family. We say we will do something, or make plans ahead of time to go to some event, only to have our hopes dashed and the injury multiplied by disappointing those close to us. And the situation is not improved by those who have little understanding or willingness to accept such disappointment.

We cannot control the reactions of others. If grown people act like immature children because the stars do not always align perfectly for them, there is little we can do about it. If people have short memories, forgetting the good days God has blessed them with, and are only willing to focus on disappointments, we can’t make them broaden their vision to see the entire picture, one with blessings and disappointments–it’s called life.

The rain often follows sunny days, the seasons of life and the seasons of our illness change. It is wonderful to see the sun shining after so many rainy days, and how wonderful it is when the Lord blesses us with improvements in our circumstances after a difficult period. But though we may try to see and accept these situations philosophically, others may ignore the good things and only focus on the half-empty glass in front of them.

It can be painful when friends and family turn away from us because of our afflictions. It is astounding that when we need friends and family the most they can shun us, react with anger, resentment, childishness, just as we are already under the pressure of flaring illness and pain. I think this may be the worst thing about illness, worse than the pain and suffering of the illness itself.

One angry person is “mad.” Two angry people is “madness.”

I have often found that a very challenging part of my illness is not to return anger for anger. When my illness crushes expectations in others, and they react with anger, it can be a herculean task not to lash right back with my own anger and frustration. After all, I not only have the worsening illness to deal with and its disappointment, but also a “two-year-old” adult who is taking their anger out on me on top of everything else. I suspect I’m not alone in facing the madness of disappointed expectations.

I have learned over the years to take my frustrations and disappointments to God. Occasionally it may help to discuss how I’m feeling with others, but when the others are part of my frustration, it can very much be like reasoning with two-year-olds. Some people, despite their age, are not very mature, and you cannot reason with such people. The best you can do is pray that the Lord will help these people to wise up, grow up, and that God will give you the strength and patience to deal with such people as best you can.

It is very sad that on top of the weight of affliction and illness the afflicted must also deal with unmet expectations of others. Sometimes we must face our own frustrations over the bad turn of circumstances, but by far the hardest thing is to deal with the frustrations others thrust at us because we do not meet their unreasonable expectations. Sometimes I almost feel that I should wear the following sign:

I am someone living with an illness.
I will, to the best of my ability, try to live up to your expectations, but sometimes I will not meet them.
Because, as the first line says: I am someone living with an illness.

Prayer: Dear Lord, frustrations abound in our lives because of afflictions, and disappointment, especially coming from others, is very hard to bear. Help us, Lord, to be patient in affliction. Amen.

Date Night

Guest post of the week by Bradley Guthrie

Friday night is date night at our house. We put the kids to bed by eight and my husband and I pick out a movie from our direct tv options and sit and watch it uninterrupted. Without the kids coming in and out we get an opportunity to watch something that we not only can enjoy but also may not be something suitable for them. The kids know that they are not to come into the den once we start our show. If they need us (and it’s pretty rare that happens) they can call for us from upstairs. Most of the time it’s a request for a glass of water or someone needs to be tucked in again. Sometimes we can’t find a movie that both of us want to see, but we try to take turns choosing when that happens. We are each often surprised when we actually enjoy something the other one has chosen! I guess we shouldn’t be, though. As long as we’ve been able to stay together, we must like more similar things than we realize!

Online Christmas Shopping

Contributed by Milford Woods

This was the most stress-free Christmas shopping experience of my life. For several years my mom has been shopping online on Black Friday instead of going out to find great deals. She has been recommending that I do the same. However, I have gone Christmas shopping every Friday after Thanksgiving since I was a little girl, and I have always loved the thrill of getting a great deal. However, now many of the deals are also found online. I listened to my mom’s advice this year and stayed home on the Friday after Thanksgiving to shop online. I am so glad I did. I was able to find some great deals without ever leaving my house. We have our internet through clear wireless internet Wilmington, and I shopped for my husband and my kids while sitting in my house coat. I did not have to deal with the crowds and the traffic, but I still got most of my shopping done. I will never again get up at the crack of dawn to find a deal early Friday morning. I think I have started a new tradition.

Mom and Dad

Content by Sol Rosales

Mom and dad are really stubborn and I hate to say that because I love them so much. But they’re all about being low-tech which is fine except that they hate to talk on the phone so I’m never able to get in touch with them. I told them if this is how they were going to be about the phone they’d at least have to learn to email so I’ve set them up with Internet Providers and been working on what I can do to keep them in the loop. I actually had to move back home a couple of years ago when I lost my job and I was amazed at how they’ve totally shunned technology. They don’t even have a microwave in the kitchen – I mean, really, who doesn’t have a microwave! Anyway, I love my parents to death but at the end of the day they need to get with it or we’re going to have to get more involved. They like their privacy so I know they would hate that!

This is a sponsored post.  It's also appropriate because I'm in the process of getting my parents internet!

Guest Post-What Not To Wear

What Not to Wear - My Favorite Fashion Show on TV

Written by Shannon Tillman

One of my favorite fashion shows on TV that I got after reading over this Directv HD Offers comparison is What Not to Wear. Stacy London and Clinton Kelly surprise people who have been turned in by their friends and family for having terrible style. The guest is given five thousand dollars on a credit card that they can use to purchase a whole new wardrobe while shopping in New York City. Stacy and Clinton are very funny in their interactions, and they throw all of the guest's clothing away. The first day of shopping, the shopping challenged person goes on their own with a camera crew in tow. On day two, Stacy and Clinton surprise the person and assist them in shopping and spending the rest of their money. After getting new clothes, the person, who usually is a woman, gets a new hair style and their make-up done. They do a final reveal to their family and friends after returning home.

I like this show because it's entertaining and you also learn a lot about fashion while watching it. The hosts give plenty of tips on how to dress for different body types. You also get makeup and hair tips by watching What Not to Wear on satellite TV. Stacy and Clinton play off of each other, and make me laugh out loud at least once per one hour episode. I always look forward to seeing What Not to Wear - it even inspires me to clean out my own clothes closet!

Love Changes Everything by Micah Berteau - A Book Review

If you're not familiar with the story of Hosea and Gomer in the Bible, it's really quite shocking.  Here's my brief synopsis...
